Charity Chosen:

The Marian House Life Support Center has served as a strong advocate for
children in the Pikes Peak region for 30 years. The intent of the Center is to
cushion the impact of poverty on infants and children by providing parents with
essential living items to keep their children healthy and safe.

Parents who visit Life Support are welcomed into a nurturing, bi-lingual
environment that focuses on fostering rust between advocates and clients to
maximize the program’s benefits for the entire family. Trained, volunteer
advocates help parents delineate their children’s basic needs through the
intake process. Once needs are determined, the program offers families the
opportunity to “shop” for clothing, blankets, baby equipment, supplies and new
toys from the Life Support shopping area. Mothers of infants receive diapers,
formula and baby food. The Life Support program’s intent is to help families
bridge the gap during a crisis: services are not intended to be long-term.

Pregnant mothers can shop for maternity clothing, One month prior to their
due date, expectant mothers are able to return to the office for for layettes
consisting of all new items necessary to bring a newborn home. Children of
current clients are registered for the Christmas and Birthday Buddies programs
and receive a new toy and a new item of clothing on each occasion. School
supplies also are available to children of clients.

Title: Holiday Art Workshop
Location: Great Explorations Children’s Museum, St Petersburg, FL
Link out: Click here
Description: On November 15, artist/philanthropist Richard Sean Manning, co-founder of Vessels for Charity and The Manning Arts will be hosting a holiday art workshop at the Children’s Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Students are welcome to join in free of charge.
Great Explorations Children’s Museum is the first museum to receive a donated pair of abstract ceramic ‘Twin Towers’ valued at $50K on September 10, 2011 as part of a new permanent exhibit to encourage dialogue about 9/11 through art. Sean is offering his ‘Twin Towers’ to museums across the country.
The colourful ‘Twin Towers’ rotate on steel bases giving children an interesting visual as they gaze up at the 7 foot high art, set against a whimsical backdrop of ink and acrylic paintings that Manning has designed especially for Great Explorations.
“We are honoured to receive this gift for many reasons, but most important is the opportunity to show children how art communicates and unites,” says the museums’ development director Daryl DeBerry.
“Teachers became first responders for students throughout the country on 9/11 and have a responsibility to educate children that may not have even been born at the time of the attack, through meaningful projects to enhance their understanding of the value of being global citizens.” stated Manning.
Sean has pledged to create 3000 original works of Unity Art in memory of all those who perished on that fateful day and to reproduce each in a high quality giclee prints to help 501c3 organizations raise money for their worthy causes.
Charitable organizations can become affiliated with The Manning Arts and their supporters can choose an original work of art or a numbered reproduction for their tax deductible contribution. Sixty six percent of the purchase price is deposited directly into the PayPal account of the affiliate charity, and the donor receives a work of art of their choice which is mailed to them by TMA fulfillment team.
For information about how your school or organization can benefit from Vessels for Charity or The Manning Arts please contact us today.

International Humanitarian Aid Needed for Japan, March 24, 2011-06-10

With hurricane season at its peak and continued floods, wildfires, tornadoes and other natural disasters hitting communities across the United States, May 2, 2011

According to the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project, the 2011 hurricane season may see above-average activity in the Atlantic. The report estimates approximately 16 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes will occur during the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

As you read the newspapers and view the news, you have to be overwhelmed by the natural disasters occurring in communities across the country. These are our communities, where our families and friends live. Many of us know someone living in these areas.

As adults, we ask ourselves what can we do to help, how can we assist others in their time of need. As parents, we find ourselves watching these events on television with our children and explaining to them what this actually means. And as children,we so desperately want to make a difference.

What it means, is that this can happen to anyone, anytime, anyplace. We would have never said this in the past; however, with so many natural disasters before us, we have to be honest. We have to be so thankful for what we have. We have to share what we have with others, and always consider treating others like we would want to be treated.

Humanitarian aid is about reaching out to assist others in their time of need. The quality and the quantity isn’t what matters. What matters is giving of your talent, your time and your finances.

Vessel for charity seeks to plant seeds of global consciousness in our youth. Together, in communities across the country we can remind everyone the importance of charity. Each community has the potential to make an individual difference.

The vessel for charity project is unique in that it allows everyone to be involved in philanthropy. All groups involved in a project may pick a charity the group as a whole would like to support. Learn about that charity and develop a passion about it. Each participants will craft a vessel using clay. Proceeds from donations received in a friends and family fundraiser will go to the charity of choice in own community. Regardless, of socioeconomic status, where you live, age, race, Religion or sexual orientation…..One by One each person can make a difference….everyone can make it personal to make a difference.

It’s in your hands, It’s in our hands, to be a generation of givers and plant seeds of global consciousness in the minds and hearts of the next generations. Together, we can make a difference.

It has been a crazy crazy summer!

We have been very busy talking to teachers and visiting schools that we have neglected our blog…shame on us…. There is so much to do and so few of us….

A quick update…

….I was in Alabama again last week

We are currently working with Birmingham schools. My colleague, Wanda Laing, was in town this past week, and had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. John McAphee, Jr. Ed.S., Coordinator of the Department of Arts Education. Mr. McAphee is responsible for the Birmingham City Schools and is very excited to introduce Vessels for Charity to his schools. And we very excited to work with them…..There is an ongoing need for humanitarian aid in our communities and as we inspire the next generation of philanthropists, we are planting seeds of global consciousness with Vessels for Charity. Together we can be a catalyst for engaging the gifts, enthusiasm and compassion of young people in our community.

It is appropriate for K-12 classrooms, lessons on clay, character building, and connecting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)education, or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

Vessels for Charity Projects can be in a class and a club. It can include the entire school, art classes, clubs and/or certain level classes like seniors. Crafting a vessel can take a few class periods, its hand building, so it depends on your students. They craft and design a vessel, it’s fired and glazed. Ideally, projects can be completed in about 30 days. There are a few variables to consider-such as time for firing and glazing, and the number of vessels produced. Scheduling is with a signup sheet.

The project is as follows:

Decide you want to begin a Vessels for Charity Project

Talk to the students-explain you are beginning a Vessel for Charity project. Crafting vessels is hand building. Individual interpretation of a Vessel is encouraged. As the vessel is crafted, you can review the history of vessels, and include art criticism and aesthetics in your lessons. Arts provide innovations through analogies, models, skills, structures, techniques, methods, and knowledge; it works to make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) more aesthetic.

Explain they will be crafting Vessels to support a Charity of their choice. We believe that Charity starts at home, so they can suggest a local charity or a national charity. Students will work together for a common purpose, they must agree on one charity. This is a great opportunity to develop peer relations and build teams by listening to viewpoints of others about various charities.

Once a Charity is chosen, send letters home to parents and community members, explaining the project and asking for their support. (We provide sample letters)

Craft Vessels-While crafting vessels, learn more about the charity. Some ideas include (students may know someone who personally benefits from the charity, someone in their families may have been diagnosed with a disease and they are passionate about supporting that charity and they may want to share their stories, etc.), use the internet, use brochures, sharing individual stories about the organization and the difference they are making in your community and using community members and individuals from the charity. As we foster art education, we are serving the community. You can plan a service learning event where students volunteer at the charity chosen. You can feature guest speakers from the charity during regular assemblies. Students may craft more than one Vessel, and projects can be done repeatedly. You can set some goals on how much you would like to contribute to a charity and use this as a basis for how many times you complete the project and how many vessels are made.

Publicly recognize the work of students. Some ideas include seeking and encouraging media coverage, involving the local newspaper, making a scrapbook, making a video, featuring a page in the yearbook, sending photos to Vessels for Charity to post on the website and Blog and by enlisting local businesses to help publicize and support. Certificates are given at the end of each project for community service hours.

(For clubs, you can open up the opportunity to craft vessels for charity to students, and members of their local community including family members and businesses. Post open studio hours in school newsletter, letters sent home to parents, etc., on the school website, district newsletters and local media, etc.)

Host a family and friends fundraiser-this can be with other planned school functions. Some ideas include Open House, parent teacher conferences, sporting events, etc.
